Frequently asked questions

What can we help you with today?

Below are some answers to the questions we get asked the most about Munchkin and Me®

  • Munchkin and Me offers a different approach to many preschool services.

Munchkin and Me provides a combination of a structured and free-play approach which is based around play, learning and fun, whilst also supporting parents/carers (our grown ups) build a local support network and community outside of the sessions.

The sessions nurture a love of stories and develop the building blocks for vital speech, language, communication, literacy and social skills from birth. They also help support your child’s early years development across all areas in the Early Years Framework.

Munchkin and Me sessions provide you the opportunity to chat, socialise, share ideas, pick up tricks and skills to keep your munchkin(s) entertained at home, and build many precious memories.

Every session has been carefully planned by Rachel, our founder, who as a former early years teacher, and mummy herself, fully understands the unique learning and communication needs of preschoolers, toddlers and babies.

  • Munchkin sensory play for babies sessions gives you the opportunity to build a special one-on-one moment with your baby in a safe and supported environment. At this time, you will also have precious time to chat and socialise with other parents/carers who will provide a wonderful support network for you.

The sessions are both carefully structured and super-relaxed so you can be responsive to your babies sleep, feeding and changing needs.

  • Sensory play includes activities that engage ALL young children’s senses.

Typically we think of the senses as being sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, but vestibular (movement and balance) and proprioception (body position) are senses too.

Yes, there are seven senses! Sensory play encourages children to use all their senses, perhaps not at the same time, but it usually targets a few.

  • Munchkin and Me offer two types of sessions;

    1) Mini Munchkins (from birth to toddling) and;

    2) Story Explorers (toddling to 4 years).

The Mini Munchkin sessions are designed especially for you and your little ones from birth to their first steps.

These sessions will give you a number of techniques and activities to play, bond and communicate with your new baby in the first exciting stages of their life.

Examples of activities include sensory play, tummy time, songs, rhymes, bubbles, simple sign language and more.

The emphasis is on spending precious time with your baby and for them to spend time in the company of other babies building those very early social skills.

Also at Mini-Munchkin classes we will provide opportunities for support, and encouragement to meet, socialise and bond with other parent/carers so you share experiences and create wonderful memories and friendships.

Once they ‘find their feet’, your little one will most likely be suited to the Story Explorer sessions as they are more mobile and prefer to be more active.

Story Explorer session emphasise the more physical play and interactive story-exploration!

For all our sessions, the stages are given as guidelines as we know that each munchkin develops at their own pace.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to just get in touch with us for a chat.

  • You will experience 50-minutes of sensory magic and adventurous story-telling (dependent on whether you are a Mini Munchkin or Story-Explorer). We offer a different theme every week, diving into magical worlds.

You will also have time to socialise with other parents/carers during sensory time as this is so very important too!

  • You can be reassured that Munchkin and Me’s activities are all designed and developed through an understanding of dedicated academic, government and healthcare research spanning over 35-years.

You will be safe in the knowledge that you can let your baby move and explore the safest of environments.

Mini Munchkins sensory baby play sessions offer a world of exciting experiences for babies from birth and up to 13-months, providing a wonderful sense of wellbeing to you and your baby.

Suitable from birth, taking your baby on a magical journey. Sensory baby play introduces you and your munchkin to puppet shows, music, simple baby-signing, massage, singing and movement.

Munchkin and Me offers a diverse range of activities which differ each week. Every activity is designed to stimulate your baby’s senses and will give you lots of information about how your baby grows and develops through that all important first year.

In addition, every session allows time for you to socialise, meet and chat with other local parents/carers and you will make friendships that go beyond the session setting.

You and your baby will get to play with lots of different toys and sensory equipment, even the story and play areas are different every week, so you’ll get to explore and know what your baby enjoys, perfect for ideas of what to buy your baby to have at home.

  • Absolutely, everything we do in Mini Munchkins is suitable for all babies, either as it is or with a little adjustment.

    And our Story Explorers, YES.

We create stories and adventures suitable for all toddlers and preschoolers, either as it is or with a little adjustment.

In all cases, please do just get in touch with us to talk it through so we can help you and your munchkin(s) get the most out of every session.

  • Every week Munchkin and Me will advise on props and items that may be useful to bring to the session. This is normally done via our Instagram and Facebook social media pages, so please keep an eye out.

Do not worry if you miss our messages, we always bring along plenty of props and fun which means you won’t miss out any activity.

  • Yes, oodles!

Each session has a fundamental developmental benefit behind it which we are privileged to share with you!

You will leave each session armed with confidence and knowledge ready to complete all the fun and learning with your baby at home.

  • Munchkin and Me sessions are suitable from birth to under 5 years of age. You are more than welcome!

Did you know? The most miraculous advances in brain structure and function occur in the first three months of life.

Our activities are specifically designed to be safe and suitable for babies from birth to preschoolers.

  • If your baby is under 24-months when the sessions commence then Mini Munchkin is for you!

If your baby is a toddler to preschooler, then Story Explorers is for you!

  • Not a problem! 🙌🏽

We know that babies don’t always work on the schedule that we would like them to. 😁

We understand that, and with younger babies especially, they need what they need - when they need it! 😴

Munchkin and Me always encourages you to take session activities at your own pace and see to your baby’s needs as required.

You are more than welcome to breast or bottle feed your baby wherever you want to, either stay at your mat or sit at one of the chairs at the side if that’s more comfortable for you. 🍼

Likewise, if baby sleeps, stay where you are or move across to a chair (wherever you are more comfortable); and whilst baby sleeps enjoy the session with the other parents/carers.

Even if you don’t get to join in with everything during the session-time, you will still be able to pick up lots of ideas for play time at home, enjoy time out of the house and around other parents/carers and babies.

So, YES, it is well worth coming to sessions even if it is likely that your baby will need feeding or some sleep during the session.

  • NO definitely not!

We have a range of parents/carers attending each session including daddies, grandparents, relatives and carers, all contributing to our warm and open sessions.

You are welcome to bring siblings to Munchkin sessions.

If bringing both children, Munchkin and Me suggests attending the session most suitable for the older sibling where possible.

  • The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old.

Useful Link: You can find more information here: https://www.gov.uk/early-years-foundation-stage

All schools, and Ofsted-registered early years providers, must follow the EYFS, including child-minders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.

The EYFS only applies to schools and early years providers in England. There are different early years standards in Scotland and Wales.

If an area of learning conflicts with your beliefs you should talk to your child’s early years provider.

If you think one or more areas of the EYFS conflict with your religious or philosophical beliefs. Your child’s early years provider will help you understand the process of requesting an exemption.

If you are successful in obtaining an an exemption, your child will not have to take part in a specific area of learning for 12-months.
